Capitalizing on Change: Indigenous Economic Growth through SMEs and IFIs in Canada

9:45am - 11:00am

At a historic inflection point in Canada when the success of major projects, of closing infrastructure gaps, and of meeting energy transition goals are intersecting with modern treaties, settlements, and procurement targets, it is critical that Indigenous small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) exist and can scale to meet growing demands driven by a shifting reconciliation landscape. Equally vital is ensuring Indigenous Financial Institutions (IFIs) have the capital base to grow alongside the businesses they serve.

In just over two years, the IGF has committed over half of its current investor capital to IFIs precisely when and where it is needed most, enabling them to respond to these kinds of demands. And with a substantial portion of that capital already deployed and working in Indigenous businesses, trends are emerging, and wider economic and social returns are proving to be substantial.

Showcasing concrete examples, panelists will explore the impacts of the changing Indigenous economic development landscape, emerging trends and the importance of financial mechanisms tailored to Indigenous businesses.

Growing Indigenous Businesses – Prosperity Through Export

1:35pm - 2:50pm

Trade was an important contributor to Indigenous prosperity and self-sufficiency well before the arrival of the first settlers. Supported by their own unique expertise, technologies and access to resources, Nations across Turtle Island were successful traders. Treaties and a continental network of trading routes facilitated much of this trade. As modern-day Indigenous businesses and communities work to restore lost prosperity and financial sovereignty, many are looking to international trade to help achieve these goals. With Canada representing less than 2% of the global market, export markets offer good opportunities for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis companies to grow their business, and contribute to building self-sufficiency and community prosperity. Indigenous companies represent a large and diverse business community operating across all sectors of Canada’s economy. Many of these businesses already produce products and services in demand around the world. With the right supports and market entry strategies, Indigenous companies will be better placed to pursue those export opportunities. However, the obstacles and challenges many Indigenous companies face are impeding access to those export opportunities.

Moderated by Export Development Canada, this panel will seek to demystify trade and export for Indigenous businesses and partners that assist them on their entrepreneurial journey. Panelists will examine trade opportunities for businesses in Canada, explore the challenges Indigenous businesses face as they decide “if exporting is right for my business”, and offer strategies to help Indigenous companies grow their businesses through export.

Embracing the Modern Workplace Reality: Challenges and Best Practices for Attracting and Retaining Top Indigenous Talent

10:45am - 12:00pm

As Canadian employers begin to embrace their company’s corporate goals related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) targets and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the workplace, competition for Indigenous talent has never been fiercer. For Indigenous employers to compete for top talent, organizations need to provide comparable wage rates, competitive benefit packages and other workplace working conditions such as flexible and remote work arrangements, and modern technology and systems. Because Indigenous organizations have typically not worked with the same level of resources as large corporations, attracting the top Indigenous talent in the country to jobs that build up our Indigenous institutions and communities has become increasingly challenging.

This panel will explore the challenges faced by Indigenous employers as they try to attract and retain the most talented members of our communities to work in Indigenous-led and controlled institutions. Panelists will also discuss best practices and successful strategies for attracting and retaining Indigenous talent to do the important work required to build capacity in our communities, institutions, and businesses. Attendees will gain insights into the practical steps and creative solutions that Indigenous organizations have utilized to ensure that top talent is supported in leading Indigenous organizations.
